This Saturday the Blogcamp tour continues and appears in Birmingham for the first time. Last year, Kat and I helped Sally Whittle with Blogcamps in London, Bristol, Manchester and Brighton and this year’s lineup promises to build on that success.
The idea of Blogcamp is pretty straightforward. It’s a free event, predominantly (but not exclusively) attended by parenting bloggers and is an informal blend of workshops and debates about topics such as copywriting, internet safety, dealing with PRs, photography and other such mildly geeky topics.
Have presented a couple of times on ‘how to deal with PRs’, this Saturday I’ll be donning my white lab coat and running a workshop on how to set up a self-hosted WordPress blog, including guidance on buying a domain, setting up hosting, installing a theme and so on. So, if you’ve considered making the plunge from a free blog package to something with your own identity this might be for you (I promise it’ll be low-tech and not tooo geeky).
So, if you have any questions for the day, please post them in the comments below.
The event is full up, but I understand that some places are being made available to bloggers on the waiting list, so if you’d like to sign up, leave your name on the Blogcamp website.

Hi Phi, I’m thinking about setting up a blog and have read that it’s best if you stick to a broad theme. I can’t think of one as I have lots of interests. What would you recommend please?
thanks
Thanks for your comment Melissa. Yes, as a rule of thumb, I would say that it’s a good idea to have a theme – or at least think about who your audience is. If it’s too disparate then you may find that it’s difficult keeping everyone interested. That said, it depends on your objectives: I’ve used personal blogs before for just acting as a journal for running events I’ve taken part in and don’t really care who reads it, so have been less bothered about staying on topic.
The most important thing is picking a subject matter or area that you’re interested in, otherwise it just feels like a job. And, since most people don’t directly earn money from blogging, that’s not a good situation to be in!
