Prime minister dunks out of biscuit question

by Phil Szomszor on October 18, 2009

When it comes to the crunch Gordon Brown shows a taste for evasion in the great biscuit debate reported The Times yesterday, tongue firmly in cheek. In his first webchat for Mumsnet, it was the topic of his favourite biscuit that apparently threw the PM the most, who was evidently more prepared for questions on childcare vouchers and climate change than choosing between a Garibaldi and a Hobknob.

The story itself is throwaway stuff, but what stuck out for me that Brown chose Mumsnet for his first webchat, and that the findings made national news. Recognising the power of social media, the webchat also saw the importance of market segmentation – showing that there’s more to online life than Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

And if you really are bothered to know what Brown’s fave biscuit is, there’s no need to worry, The Times put the issue to bed today after the PM was said to have ‘crumbled’ under pressure to tell all. It is, by all accounts, anything with chocolate on.

An edited transcript of the webchat can be read directly on Mumsnet.
