Unlocking a Nokia

by Phil on April 22, 2008

My phone died on Friday afternoon. What with trying to find a new flat and organise myself for my holiday next week, it was a timely reminder of how reliant we all are on our mobile phones. I’m not one of those people that will tell you how liberating the whole thing is.

I’ve had my old Nokia 6233 for a couple of years now and it’s basically fallen to bits and now won’t charge.

Nokia 6310iFortunately my mate Stav came to the rescue with an old Nokia 6310i which he had laying around. According to a website that sells refurb 6310is (over £100!), it was discontinued four years ago, so is definitely in the oldskool camp – i.e. not whiz bangs like 2 mp camera or video messaging, just a nice chunky phone with mono screen.

But first thing’s first, I needed to get it unlocked. There are reputedly merchants down Leicester market that’ll unlock a phone for a fiver, but Stav reckoned I could do it myself. A quick Google search found a free Nokia unlocking site, where you just put in a few details, like the IMEI code (found under the battery) and hey presto, you get a code that’ll unlock your phone. Magic.
