“Back of the net!” as Alan Partridge would say.

I seem to have recovered enough from the groin strain to rekindle my exercise campaign again, so…

  • Thursday was swimming night. I went to the Aylestone pools in Leicester. I’m trying not to be toooo much of a snob (though I know deep down I am), but it’s the first time I’ve been in a public bath for a while. Where’s the complementary shower gel? And those little bags to put my wet kit in? And why is there silt on the bottom of the pool? Still, I got a bit of a swim in and have decided that my only hope is to breast stroke the damn triathlon.
  • On Friday it was time for a run. I went from the office in Cromford, starting along the canal and then running up the steepest incline I’ve ever attempted. My heart rate went up to 192 at one point and stayed at over 180 for the whole of the climb. I was, however, rewarded with fantastic views of Derwent Valley when I got to the top.
  • It went a bit pear shaped on Saturday. I ate fish and chips and drank beer. ‘Nuff said.
  • Today was better. After a warm up and some stomach busting sit ups, I simulated a Sprint Tri in the gym. Discounting transfer times it would take my 1.5 hours to do a Sprint. Except when I do the real thing I’ve got the whole kerfuffle with the wet suit, plus I’ll need to get my stomach pumped after swallowing half the English channel. Oh and I’m not doing a Sprint Tri, I’ve got to do double the distances all round.

Tomorrow I plan to get back to the pool. Aylestone has got adult swimming again if I can get there in time from work. It’s unlikely this last minute attempt will be enough to make me look anything but a lame duck, but it’s worth a shot.
