Why it's important to get outside your social media bubble

I see lots of people getting amazing levels of engagement on social media channels like LinkedIn - but I often wonder, are they the right people they are getting attention from. Often, when you dig a little bit deeper, you’ll see its the same people time and time again.

In effect this creates a bubble, where only the same people, often with lots of common connections, see the content.

In some ways, it’s a good thing to have a fanbase of reliable cheerleaders. It’s good for your confidence and helps signal to LinkedIn’s algorithm that what you’re saying is worthy of putting in more people’s feed.

But what if you’re trying to reach people outside of your first degree connections? If you’re using social media for things like sales, leadership communications or influencer relations, there’s a good chance that this is the case.

Here’s my quick explanation for why it’s important to get outside of your social media bubble.

My advice is, if you know who you want to reach, find the people around them who they're interested in and work on those relationships. At the very least just try to seek opportunities outside your first degree connections.
